Different from the noisy city during the day, Ho Chi Minh city was really quiet and tranquil after night. The only sound was from the knock of clear rice noodle soup stalls or street cleaning workers swept the leaves. It couldn’t be imagined that it was crowded with people a few hours ago.

There are countless eating places in Saigon with various choices of foods. However after 24:00 most vendors close their food stalls so that they can relax and prepare foods for the next day. Therefore it wasn’t easy to find a place to eat at this time. One of the most famous night food areas is Ben Thanh market. There you can taste everything from traditional Vietnamese foods to international foods.

Congee stalls on Xo Viet Nghe Tinh street which are opened at night are famous with locals and tourists because the dish isn’t only cheap but also delicious. There’re various foods to eat with congee: braised pork (fish) in brown sauce, fried shredded pork, salted duck eggs… It was dark and cool at night, nothing’s better than enjoying hot congee with spicy pepper.

A non-sleeping night in Saigon

After filling the stomach, we continued our exciting Saigon motorbike tour by visiting iconic sights of the city. It’s said that “Saigon’s never sleeping”. Most tourist attractions of Saigon was covered a sparkling coat at this time.

It was 2:10 am, the street was empty. You could pose without being afraid of anything. Foreign visitors like enjoying the quiet night so much.

That’s it! Different people live and work at different times. Some like a dynamic and effervescent Saigon. Others like the elegant calm of the city. People never stop living and working. In the morning Saigon is a city for hard workers, students, office workers, vendors, businessmen… At night the city is an ideal place for “night owls” who love getting around the street to have fun. Especially in the early morning, Saigon becomes lonely and profound. Street cleaning workers with sweeps on their hands and bright uniforms are the familiar scenes with any Saigonese.

It was 4:00 am. The sky was still dark and the street light hasn’t been turned off. But Saigon people would wake up soon. Visiting Ben Thanh market in the center of the city, we could see vendors started receiving goods, preparing for the business. A vendor told me: “Doing business at the market isn’t easy and we must work hard. At 7:00 pm we close the store, sleep for a while. We have to wake up at 2:00 am to receive goods, then at 4:00 am we come back to the market to arrange everything and start the business”.

Motorbike taxi drivers who haven’t slept at night were standing near their motorbikes to wait for customers. Street food stalls have been opened and we could see beautiful girls in white Ao Dai ride bicycles to schools. Old people gather at the cafe to enjoy some coffee, read newspapers and talk to each other.
