Visiting ancient buildings is the main activity during the journey traveling Hoi An Ancient Town. Phung Hung Ancient House is one the famous ancient house in Hoi An because of its fascinated architecture that represents the combination of many ancient styles.

Phung Hung Ancient House is located at 4 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street. The house is built in 1780. The first owner of the Phung Hung old house is a Vietnamese trader. He sold forestry products such as cinnamon, pepper, salt, silk, ceramics, glass… He named the house as Phung Hung with the expectation that thriving would come in his business. Currently, the house is owned by the 8th generation descendant who continues living in and preserving this ancient house.

Phung Hung Ancient House is a combination of the three architecture styles: Vietnam, Japan, and China. In particular, the balcony and door system is Chinese architecture. The roof of the nave is Japanese architecture. Grillage systems, crossbeams, spars, roofs of facade and backside are Vietnamese architecture. Phung Hung House is also a popular type of trader houses in the 19th century in urban Vietnam.

The house has 80 columns made of precious wood. Each column stands on a lotus-shaped base in order to minimize subsidence and to prevent termites from damaging it. The house is decorated horizontal wood boards and vertical wood panel pairs with Chinese words carved skillfully. In particular, visitors are impressed with the Phung Hung Hoi An ancient house by exquisitely carved carp image on the porch rack. This is a symbolic image with many meanings: for the Vietnamese, it is flourishing, for the Chinese, it is luckiness, for the Japanese, it is power. It is now reserved for the worship of the family’s ancestors and of Thien Hau Holy Mother.

Hoi An Ancient Town was built during the development period of Hoi An urban, absorbing the quintessence of East Asian architecture. Spending over 100 years with many storms and wars, this place is luckily still intact. It has been recognized national level relic.
