Asian openbill stork in Tram Chim National Park

Asian openbill stork (Anastomus oscitans) is a large wading bird in the stork family Ciconiidae. Vietnamese people call this bird Snail stork (Cò ốc) because its favorite food is snail. This species was listed in Vietnam’s Red Data Book in 2007. In 2016, about 10,000 Asian openbill stork in Tram Chim make about 1,000 nests. This proved that the environment in the national park has become better for birds to come, live, hunt for foods and lay eggs. Read more about the Ultimate guide to Tram Chim National Park.

The breeding season for Asian openbill storks starts from August when the couples make friends and flirt with each other. Male and female storks express their love by touching their beaks. According to an experienced officer in Tram Chim, male and female storks hold in the other’s mouth, the sound made by the beaks when they mate. In September, they make nests, then lay and incubate eggs. Made from big and hard branches and leaves, nests of Asian openbill stork are big and firm. They usually build their nests on top of trees. Two-month-old birds learn to fly.
