Location
The trade village is located at the foot of Ngu Hanh Son Mountains or Marble Mountains, Hoa Hai Ward, Ngu Hanh Son District, Danang City. The village is about 10 km from Han Market – the city center and about 20 km from Hoi An.
How to reach Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village? You can catch a taxi from Danang City or Hoi An City to the village. Taxi fares cost about VND 15,000. Or you can rent a private car to go to Non Nuoc Stone Village. If you are an adventurous tourist, you can rent a motorcycle and ride it to the village. History of Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village in Danang
According to old carving masters in Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village, this traditional trade village has been in existence for nearly 200 years. The village was established at the end of the 18th century. Some people believe that the village was founded in the middle of the 17th century.
Mr. Huynh Ba Quat from Thanh Hoa Province created the carving village. He immigrated in Danang and made his living through agriculture. He lived at the foot of Marble Mountains where he discovered marble mountains. He used the marble stones to create lots of decoration items during his free time. Later, he created gravestones, mortars, pestles, etc. More and more people loved to use the crafts from stones. Since then, Mr. Quat earned his living through making stone crafts.
Others say that craftsmen from Thanh Hoa went to live at the foot of Marble Mountains at the end of the 18th century. At first, stone carvers were their second jobs. The increasing needs of carved stone items make many villager become stone carvers.
His children and grandchildren, neighbors and others in the village learned to make carvings from stones. They mined stones, made tools, decoration items at pagodas, temples and houses. Rice flour mills, rice mortars, carved stones, phoenixes, unicorns, lions, dragons, turtles, Buddha statues, Champa artistic items, were made from stones.
People of many generations in the village has continued to keep the stone-carving tradition. In the recent years, Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village has been one of the top tourist destinations in Danang. At the village, visitors are introduced the Vietnamese culture, art, Central people’s indigenity, hard work and talents.
