In Vietnam, most of the villages have communal houses. Every communal house has the god helping the village be peaceful, the villagers are healthy and the crops be good. The Architectural style of Cam Pho Communal House (or Cam Pho Temple) is considered typical for the one in the Central region.
Cam Pho Communal House (Cam Pho Temple) is located at 52 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, Cam Pho Commune, Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province. The Temple was built in the late XV century and underwent two restoration times in 1817 and in 1897 and it has been intact in shape until today. Among the architectural works in Hoi An, Cam Pho Communal House is the old communal house has the largest life.
Cam Pho Communal House is designed according to the Southeast Asia architectural style. In front of the house has a three-entrance gate built of brick. The upper part of the main entrance has the name of the house and on 2 main pillars has a parallel sentence pair, all of them are carved with Chinese. The gate looks majestic and ancient.
Just the front of the main hall is a 4-roof small house. The main hall has 5 spaces, the middle space worships Thanh Hoang Bon Canh Chi Than (the god controlling the village) the two sides have Ta Ban and Huu Ban (The gods helping Than Hoang Bon Canh Chi Than). The backside of the main hall worships Tien Hien, Hau Hien (people passed away, before having the duty in the temple). The temple is decorated horizontal wood boards and vertical wood panel pairs with Chinese words carved skillfully. 2 sides of the main are Dong Lang and Tay Lang (The working places of the officers in the temple and resting ones of visitors). The architecture, the worshiping way, and the decoration are very skillful, solemn and ancient.
The campus of Cam Pho Communal House is also a symbol of the campuses of ancient communal houses in Vietnamese with complete space: banyan tree – water wharf – temple yard. However, along with the urbanization of the City, shady trees, the narrow road leading to the river wharf has given way to new residents.
Cam Pho Communal House with unique values of architecture and spirituality has become an indispensable tourist destination in the journey to explore Hoi An.
