The road surrounding the village is lined with green trees, on both sides, people grow flowers and vegetables to create the soul of the countryside. The rustic beauty of the countryside, plus the poetic features of the Cai Be river and the canals bending in front of the old houses, make this place even more attractive to international tourists to visit and experience the lives of locals in the Tien Giang river region.

The first impression when visitors come here is the image of ancient houses bearing bold southern architecture and garden culture dating back over 150 years. The old houses here are not close together like in some other ancient villages but are interwoven with luxuriant orchards, creating a poetic beauty that attracts tourists. The old houses in Dong Hoa Hiep are scattered in the hamlets of An Binh Dong, Phu Hoa hamlet, An Loi hamlet, An Thanh hamlet… Some hamlets are connected like a chessboard area, within a radius of about 2km, so visitors only need a bike or walk to be able to go around the village…

The first is the old house of Mr. Xoat (An Thach hamlet). This is the oldest house in Dong Hoa Hiep, built in 1818, 200 years now. Although the house looks from the outside with Western architecture, the inside has the look of Hue’s ruong house combined with Southern folk house architecture. Currently, the sixth generation descendant is living in the house.

Not as quiet as the old house of Mr. Xoat, the old house of Mr. Kiet (Phu Hoa hamlet) has many people coming in and out, and the children and grandchildren living in the house are also more crowded.
This house has the mark of an ancient village in the Northern Delta with 5 compartments and 3 wings and many columns and trusses made of precious wood…, built in 1838. The house also keeps many precious antiques such as tables and chairs with delicate patterns, and porcelain utensils… are known as the “nine great beautiful houses” of Vietnam.

Located in an area of over 20,000m² and surrounded by a year-round fruit garden, the old house of Mr. Phan Van Duc has an architectural style that harmoniously combines Southern Vietnam and French cultures.

The house was built in 1850, and the foundation is 0.5m high above the ground, including two houses: the front house and the back house, separated by a Thien Tinh courtyard (skylight). At present, many precious and beautiful items are still kept in the house, showing a rich and elegant hobby of the rich families in South Vietnam in the past. In addition to the fruit garden that tourists can visit and enjoy, in front of the house, there are also beautiful flower pots and bonsai trees. More poetic and lovely is the wharf in front of the house, convenient for visitors to visit by waterway, blooming bougainvillea all year round.

There are many old houses in the village. Each house has its own r character. The ancient house of Mr. Tong hid behind a fence of bright yellow flowers and in front of the house, there were many old apricot trees bearing the national cultural identity of the Southern Vietnam river region. The old house of Mr. Vo with the dark brown tile roof, the glossy black sofas with the color of the time…

If you want to experience rest and dining in an old house, you can contact the family of Mr. Kiet, Mr. Vo, Mr. Ba Duc… These old houses all have homestay travel services. Visitors can experience daily activities with local people: making rice paper, making milk rice paper, taking care of orchards, Cai Be floating market, catching fish, and listening to don ca tai tu (a type of music in the Mekong Delta)…

Currently, Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village has 7 old houses built 150 to 220 years ago and 29 houses built 80-100 years ago. With great cultural and architectural values, Dong Hoa Hiep Ancient Village was honored to be recognized as a National Monument by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2017.

Along with the old houses and green gardens, the people of Dong Hoa Hiep also preserve and promote the value of the simple lifestyle, creating a form of community tourism with its own identity. Traveling to Tien Giang, coming to the ancient village, visitors will feel the hospitality and honesty of the people of the Southwest Vietnam region.
