Mekong Delta Or Characters Of The South West Of Vietnam
The South West of Vietnam is also called Cuu Long Delta or the West or Mekong Delta. The West is large about 40,548.2km2, including 12 provinces and 1 city of the center. Those are Long An, Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Ben Tre, Dong Thap, Tra Vinh, An Giang, Hau Giang, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Kien Giang, Ca Mau and Can Tho City.
Before 17th century, here had been bushy forest with many kinds of fierce animals. Some people built houses on the tree to prevent fierce animals. They lived on hunting and gathering. After then, people from the Central Vietnam and China came, exploited virgin ground. This region has been clearer and clearer.
The West has characters without anywhere similar. Firstly, we talk about the scenery of the West. The main point controlling all the West landscapes is the interlace river system. Along two banks of a river is two water coconut lines. The water coconut trees grow into groves. The leaves go up and bend and when there is a wind, they waver up and down very beautifully. Among water coconut lines there are ban trees. The ban roots tick out the ground the same bamboo spikes. The gentle branches wave when a wind comes. Among rivers and canals are coconut gardens. The trunk of the coconut tree grows straight and coconut leaves arrange into layers. When winds come, the leaves incline along wind very beautifully. Coconut trees grow into lines. Distance between two trees is about eight meters and the leaves made shade covering a large area. Besides coconut gardens, there are fruit tree gardens. There are kinds of fruit tree such as rambutan, mangosteen, durian, mango, orange and mandarin. Besides coconut gardens and fruit tree gardens, there are limitless paddy fields. There are places being vast and thick mangrove forests. Here is the home of birds, bees, turtle, snake and fish.
Secondly, we are talking about the people of the West. Gentle rivers, sweet and honest fruit trees, green and fresh paddy fields and river full shrimp and fish make honest, generous and helpful characters of the people of West.
Most of the West people are honest, through year live with paddy field, seldom argue with each other. They live agreeably, seldom request. They usually help in difficult situations. Especially they are very hospitable.
Coming back to the West, we will be enjoyed Nghe thuat don ca tai tu (Amateur music art), spirit meal of the West people. Players of this art are amateur musicians, singers. In free time or on the occasion of birthday, wedding, anniversary of death, they play for joy. Players do not also need to wear clothes so finical. Playing space is usually in a warm living room or in a front yard beside the orchard with sound of wind and perfume of fruit. Playing space is sometimes a boat floating on a river.
Talking about the South West of Vietnam, we do not forget to talk about special food of this river and water region. Those are salted fish and bong sung ( a kind of tree having a soft trunk and living in water), anabas cooked with brine in a large bowl, tiny shrimp cooked with brine and coconut quintessence, snake-head grilled in straw, mouse toasted in pan, sour soup with chopstick pairing flower, duck soup, paper cake, sticky rice alcohol, bee honey and sugar-can juice,….
The above is characters of the west. Having an opportunity, you come back to visit this river and water. You will really see what I have just spoken and love more this Vietnam country.

Life in the delta revolves around the river, and as such, this is the only real way to view and understand it.
