Phu My Hung Flower Market in Ho Chi Minh City

Every year, Spring Flower Festival has been held for over 10 times in the Phu My Hung Residential Area which is known as the rich town in Ho Chi Minh City. The festival covers an area of 7 ha, with the main flower street is on Ton Dat Tien Street. In the area, there are hundreds of flower stores selling thousands of trees, plants, flowers for decorating houses at Tet Festival. Saigon people usually called the area of the stores Phu My Hung Flower Market. It is one of the biggest of its kind in the city and attracts a large number of people to see and buy beautiful flowers.

General information

Location: Starlight Bridge or Ton Dat Tien Street, Tan Phu Ward, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City. CLICK HERE to see the location of the flower market on Google Maps. Because the Spring Flower Festival including the flower market is held in a large area around Starlight Bridge so that visitors can set the destination to Starlight Bridge, Crescent Mall or Ton Dat Tien Street which are about 7.5 km from District 1.

Opening days: Although Phu My Hung Spring Flower Festival usually opens from the 23rd day of the lunar December in the old year to the 5th day of the lunar January in the new year, Phu My Hung Flower Market opens from the 23rd day to the 29th (or 30th) day of the lunar December in the old year because no one buy flowers after the lunar New Year’s Eve.

What is the best time to visit Phu My Hung Flower Market?

Visitors should not go to the market in the afternoon when the sun is strong. The flower market in the morning and the late afternoon looks stunning with colorful flowers and green trees and plants. Visitors have chances to take the best photos with flowers and choose fresh and beautiful flowers for decorating their houses. At night, the stores are illuminated with light bulbs and street lights, the air is fresh and it is cool. It is a great time to enjoy the beauty of the flowers while walking along the street.

What are sold at Phu My Hung Flower Market?

Trees

Golden apricot tree and pink apricot tree are the two most popular trees at the Vietnamese Tet Festival thanks to the lucky colors and nice shapes. In addition, tamarind trees, guava trees, wrightia religiosa (mai chiếu thủy), Ixora-coccinea (hoa trang) are also displayed and sold at the market.  Some trees look like waterfalls, full trays of gold.

The trees are in different shapes and sizes. Some trees are a half meter high, some are 5 meter high. Visitors love to take photos with big trees with lots of blossoms. Old trees with great shapes cost up to VND one billion. Small golden/pink apricot trees costs about VND 200,000 and are usually arranged on coffee tables. Prices of medium-sized golden/pink apricot trees range between VND 500,000 and 1,000,000 and are put in yards, front corridors or inside houses.

Plants

Plants in ceramic and plastic pots and hangers are the favorite of many people. Ardisia crenata is called Kim ngân lượng literally meaning Tael of golden and symbolizing prosperity in Vietnam. It has abundant fruits in red color which is the most favorite at Tet festival. Hylocereus is called Tài lộc in Vietnam, tài has two meanings: money and talent, Lộc (bud) represents new vitality. Some plants such as Guzmania (Phát lộc bông) has no flower but colorful young leaves.

In recent years, insect repellent plants are sold at Phu My Hung Flower Market and attract many people. Cute tropical pitcher plants, venuss flytraps costing from VND 150,000 are the most favorite insect repellent plants.

Plumpy red radishes with lucky words with green leaves in fan-shaped pots symbolize happiness, prosperity, health and longevity. Pots containing three words Phúc Lộc Thọ (Fortune, New Vitality or Bud, Longevity), two words Tài Lộc (Talent or Money, New Vitality or Bud) are popular at the market.

Flower is a must at Tet festival. Trees and plants can be grown after Tet, flowers such as marigolds, daisies, sunflowers, cockscombs will be thrown away before the 10th day of January. Most of them are colorful, bright and have meaning.
