Con Tan Vinh is an additional name for Con Phung. Phung is situated inside the realm of the four spirits (Long, Lan, Quy, Phung). whereas Long and Lan islands are found in Tien Giang Province, Quy and Phung islands are found in Ben Tre Province. The name con (dune) or cu lao (islet) is sometimes used to describe the middle beach, a strip of land created in the center of a big river by the process of long-term alluvial accretion, in various parts of Vietnam, most frequently in the South.
Con Phung was initially merely a floating island in the Tien River in the 1930s, but as a result of the plentiful alluvial deposition every year, it has grown to a size of over 50 hectares. When Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam arrived in this area to construct Nam Quoc Phat pagoda in the early 20th century, this is when the term Con Phung first appeared. Con Phung was the name given to an old cup that the construction workers gave the project after picking it up when it was under construction. It is also known as Dao Dua island since Nguyen Thanh Nam formed the Dao Dua sect while he was here to construct Nam Quoc Phat temple. Dao Dua encourages the spreading of peace.
Ben Tre may be reached from Ho Chi Minh City in 1.5 to 2 hours of driving time. You cross the Rach Mieu bridge, turn left, and then there is a boat that will take you to Con Phung.
