Location & History of Thang Long Water Puppet Theater
Thang Long Water Puppet Theater is located at 57B, Dinh Tien Hoang Street, nearby Hoan Kiem Lake. This is a familiar address for not only domestic tourists but also foreign ones who want to enjoy water puppet shows and explore the beauty of this unique Vietnam traditional art.
In 1969, Thang Long Theater was built, and since 1990, many water puppet shows have been performed by Thang Long theater artists. Every year, over 600 shows are offered to about 160,000 audiences. Moreover, the theater has brought water puppetry art to over 40 foreign countries like America, France, Spain, Australia, Japan … through performance tours, or puppetry festivals, or international cultural exchange program.

Traditional content of water puppet performance like the daily life of Vietnamese farmers (catching fishes, cultivating, tending buffalo…), folk entertainment ( dragon dancing, swimming contest…), or historical legends (Le Loi returns precious sword…) with modest performance way have attracted lots of audiences for lots of centuries. In addition, the artists of Thang Long Water Puppet Theater have renewed the old puppet shows with the effect of light, music, and combination between people and puppets.
