Dong Tam Snake Farm is one of the largest snake-raising centers in Viet Nam, where venom is produced for local use and export. The farm is located 12 kilometers from My Tho City, Tien Giang Province. Snakes here have a peaceful life without the impact of man.

Dong Tam Snake Farm – Must to Know About

Tourists can see lots of researched snakes that are extremely aggressive and even capable of spitting poison. Snake venom is often applied in modern medicine today in the form of a paste or a topical ointment. Specializes in the treatment of arthritis, neuritis, and rheumatism. Snake venom also inhibits the growth of some types of cancer cells and lowers blood pressure in high blood pressure.

The farm covers 12 hectares, consisting of simulated wilderness areas, surrounded by ditches for snakes as well as areas for other animals like sheep, ostriches, yellow tortoises, tigers, crocodiles, and so on.

During a trip to the World of Snakes, you will have the opportunity to learn about Dong Tam farm’s history, how to treat snakebites, and demonstrated venom extraction and some of its uses.

Dong Tam guides will also give travelers an opportunity to discover the farm. You should not get too close to cages because there are many poisonous snakes like copperheads, endorphins that lie in branches, or snakes crawling out of their holes. Here, you can take a lot of photos of the cobras which are kept in an open pit. Normally, they will not harm you if you ignore them. However, they will strike if they are once provoked. On the other hand though, the pythons are docile enough to be taken out of their cages and handled, but be warned that the big ones are capable of strangling a human.

At some cages, the guide will pull a snake out for visitors to take photos and expounds about different kinds of snakes. You will also be able to see that there will be some snakes living in special cages and they will be given mice for meals by the employers of the farm.

Not all snakes are being raised for venom production; some of them will become food for fellow creatures aggressive. Interestingly, the farm provides products made from snakes such as snake medicinal wine for you to buy. In addition to snakes, Dong Tam Farm also raises some fake wild animals such as crocodiles, golden turtles, bears, wild cats, and goats.

Dong Tam Snake Farm is operated by the Vietnamese military for profit and is open to the public. The restaurant here has even cobra on the menu and there is a shop where you can stock up on cobra antivenin.

A representative of Dong Tam Snake Farm said that Dong Tam saves around 500 lives yearly, usually poor patients in the Mekong Delta who arrive at the farm when their situations become critical.
