Ho Chi Minh City (also known as its former name of Saigon) is located in the south of Vietnam, on the southeastern edge of the Indochina peninsula along the South China Sea. The city is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Vietnam thanks to its classic French architecture, ornate temples and pagodas, unique culture, markets, skyscrapers, shopping centers, and delicious foods. Most of the tourists are stuck in District 1 which is home to popular tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers and District 5 which is home to the famous China Town and Thien Hau Temple. District 1

District 1 covers an area of approximately 7.8 km2 and is considered the center of Ho Chi Minh City. The district was established as the center of Indochina by the French government, that resulted in many beautiful government office buildings with classic French architectural styles in Saigon. As mentioned above, District 1 is full of the most popular tourist attractions and things to do for tourists. You can find the best hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs, and shopping centers there. Ho Chi Minh backpacker area which is home to reasonably priced hotels, restaurants, bars is also located in District 1. Generally, District 1 is the hub for tourists traveling to the city. A large number of tourists choose to stay at accommodations in District 1. The district is about 8 km from Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN).

District 2

The center of District 2 is located about 10 km from District 1’s center. Covering a total area of 50 km2, District 2 was one of the poorest parts of the city due to the separation by the Saigon River from the city center. The completion of Thu Thiem Tunnels which connects District 2 and District 1, and Thu Thiem Bridge which connects District 2 and Binh Thanh District support the development of the district. The government plans to turn the district into a new district for wealthy citizens, new economic and political center. Thao Dien Ward has many luxury villas and apartment buildings which are home to many rich Vietnamese people and foreigners.

District 3

Located right in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City and next to District 1, District 3 is home to many locals in small houses in narrow alleyways and expats, Vietnamese professionals who would like to stay away from the crowded and too noisy District 1. The total area of District 3 is rather small, 4.9 km2. Its main streets in this district are lined with restaurants, cafes, and shops.

District 4

Located about 3 km from District 1, District 4 has an area of 4.2 km2 and is home to many local people living in apartment buildings and houses in alleyways. Once a mafia hotspot ruled by notorious crime boss Nam Cam in the 1980s and 1990s, District 4 carries a darker reputation among the other districts of the city. However, those days have been gone and the area has become a lively and exciting part of the city and a great destination for tourists that would like to learn more about the real Saigon. The district is famous for the Vinh Khanh Food Street, which has become a popular foodie destination and a favorite stop on Saigon food tours.

District 7

District 7 is a large district with a total area of 35.7 km2. The district is located about 8 km from the city center. Phu My Hung Urban Area in District 7 is a new area with luxury apartment buildings, villas, restaurants, shopping centers, good schools, and universities. The district is chosen by many rich people including businessmen, artists, foreigners. Ban Nguyet Lake and Anh Sao Bridge which are favorite places of many Vietnamese and foreigners coming for walking, relaxing, taking photos. Phu My Hung Spring Flower Festival, held every year at Tet festival is one of the biggest spring flower festivals in the city.

District 8

District 8 is located about 12 km from District 1 and covers a total area of 19 km2. Separated from other districts by branches of rivers and channels, District 8 is less developing and touristic. The district is an area where you can see real life of Saigon people who are as not as rich as the people in District 1, 2, 3, 7. Along the populated rivers and channels, there are many slums which are home to poor people. Binh Dong Wharf and Phu Dinh Wharf “floating markets” where boats are home of many families, the boats function as mean of transport and stores to sell (whole sale and retail) fresh fruits. District 8 is also famous for the beautifully decorated Pham The Hien Street during Chrismas.

Binh Tan District

Covering an area of 52 km2 and located about 14 km from the city center, Binh Tan District connects Ho Chi Minh City to the western and Mekong Delta via the National Highway 1A and Mien Tay Bus Station. Although the district is large, it is lesser-known and less touristic. Local markets and some great pagodas, temples, and the St. Paul’s Cathedral make the district worth visiting.

Can Gio, covering an area of 704 km2, is the only coastal district of Ho Chi Minh City and famous with mangrove forests and the beach. Nha Be District

Nha Be District, covering an area of 100 km2, is a busy port with one-third of its area borders with Soai Rap River. The district is next to District 7 and about 12.5 km far from District 1.
