At the end of lunar years, Tan Quy Dong Flower Village in Sa Dec City, Dong Thap Province is more colorful with a variety of flowers and plants for decorating houses, offices and other places at Tet Festival – the biggest festival in Vietnam. Tan Quy Dong Village, Sa Dec City, Dong Thap Province. CLICK HERE to see the location of the flower market on Google Maps. Tan Quy Dong Flower Village is about 150 km from District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. It takes about 3 hours to drive from Ho Chi Minh City’s center to the flower village.
The 2.3-km-long Duong Hoa Sa Dec Street is lined with ornamental flower fields, plant stores line In the area bordered by Le Loi Street, Mekong River and Bui Thi Xuan, there is a large number of flower fields (9 Kha Daisy Field, Sa Dec Daisy Field, Ngoc Trai, Tan My Ornamental Plant Field, Tu Ton Rose Field).

Ornamental plants for Tet decoration at Tan Quy Dong Flower Village
Located on the bank of Tien River, Tan Quy Dong Village has rich layers of alluvial sediment. There are more than 1,500 families make their living on growing flowers and plants of more than 1,000 species, including over 50 rose species. The village has been known as Tan Quy Dong Flower Village, with a total area of about 60 ha. Farmers grow decorative flowers and plants and sell them in the domestic market. Roses and some plants are exported abroad.
At Tet festival, the village grows many species of plants and trees for Tet. Chrysanthemum morifolium (cúc mâm xôi), daisies (cúc), Ardisia crenata (Kim ngân lượng), Kumquat trees (Tắc, quất), Cockcombs (Mào gà), Orchids (Hoa lan) and many plants which have good meanings are grown and sold popularly in the fields, gardens and stores in the village from the 15th day of the lunar December.
Yellow Chrysanthemum morifolium (cúc mâm xôi) has yellow color, a pot of these flowers look like a full tray of steamed sticky rice so that it represents the abundance of foods and money.
In Vietnam, Ardisia crenata is called Kim ngân lượng which means taels of gold, it symbolizes prosperity and wealth.

How to grow and sell ornament plants, unique local life at Tan Quy Dong Flower Village?
Tradition of growing plants of shelves
Most of the plants are put on shelves made of bamboo, wood, metal, bricks, plastic tubes. Growing ornamental plants on shelves is a tradition of Sa Dec farmers. In the past, wet rice farmers grow plants in their rice fields or swamplands in order to make more money during Tet festival. Wet rice is grown in flooded conditions with water more than 50 cm so that they made shelves and put plants onto the shelves. They moved in the field by boats including sampans, round boats. When growing ornamental plants is more popular in the village, farmers turn their rice fields into ornamental plant fields. Although the field has no water, the level of water may rise. They still keep the tradition of “growing of shelves” and going around the fields by boats in order to protect the plants in the flood season in Mekong Delta.

Watering plants with water in channels
They have been watered the plants with water in channels in front of the fields. In the past, they use big scoops with long handles made of wood, bamboo or shower buckets to get water and water the plants. It was hard to grow beautiful flowers and plants. In recent, some farmers install automatic watering systems. However, farmers must do many steps including sowing seeds, watering, fertilizing, catching worms, killing insects before harvesting.
Channels were dug in front of fields in order to water plants. Farmers usually build houses in the middle of their fields. Wooden or concrete bridges across channels connect fields and houses to main streets and roads.
Farmers buy fertile and soil for growing plants from a store. They bring the sacks to the fields by motorbikes or three-wheel vehicles.
Packaging and transport of plants
Ten days before the Lunar New Year’s Eve, vendors, workers, farmers, shippers, drivers are busy with transporting ornamental plants to other provinces of the country.
Daisies are wrapped in papers so that they are in good conditions after being transported to other provinces.

Tourists buy ornamental plants at a store, they bring the plants to their houses by car.
Tourism services
The high tourism season in Tan Quy Dong Flower Village Sa Dec City is from the 15th day to the 25th day of the lunar December. Lots of tourism services including food and beverage services, transport services, tours, etc. Some fields provide full services including beautiful fields of flowers and models, observation decks, restaurants and coffee shops.
Any local can become a taxi motorbike driver at Tet festival. If visitors need to go to gardens, coffee shop, observation deck, locals are happy to take them to the destinations by motorbike. The cost of the rides is not too high.
Entrance ticket: VND 20,000 (adult), VND 10,000 (child under 1.3 m); Price includes small landscapes, wishing bridge, shacks, 20-m-high observation deck.
Happy Land Hung Thy has windmills, wooden bridges, huge bird’s nest, wishing trees, lines of colorful lanterns, a bridge with umbrellas and lots of flowers.
