The Upstream Itinerary of Mekong River Cruise from Vietnam to Cambodia

The following route is for Mekong Eyes Explorer Cruise Ship but you can book for Gecko Eyes and Dragon Eyes (daily departures).

Pick up

In the morning of the first day, be picked up at your hotel in the center of Saigon (District 1 and parts of District 3). Hop on our car/van/bus and travel to Can Tho. Arrive at the port of embarkation in Can Tho Province (4 days 3 nights to Phnom Penh), Cai Be in Tien Giang Province (3 days 2 nights to Phnom Penh), or Cao Lanh in Dong Thap Province (2 days 1 night). The transfer takes about 3 hours depending on traffic and the embarkation port. After a warmly welcome and refreshing welcome drink, be shown on-board facilities and your cozy cabin, check in and take a rest.

Thursday: Can Tho – Cai Be

The boat starts cruising and a delicious lunch is served right after that. Relax and watch the impressive scenery and the daily local life of the indigenous Mekong people.

In the afternoon, disembark for a nice village, stroll through the surrounding lush fruit orchards and green rice fields. Meet the generous locals and taste the local produce and fresh tropical fruits.

Return back on board and enjoy a refreshing drink at the bar or simply relax on deck. Enjoy the romantic river sunset over the fabulous water landscape of the Mekong River. The first day ends with a flavorful and delightful on-board dinner. The cruise boat anchors at night.

Wake up well rested to the river’s sound, enjoy an early breakfast, get ready for another amazing day of sightseeing in the Mekong Delta Region. At around 6:30, the cruise boat sets off for a sunrise cruise. See lots of interesting things and learn more about the life of local people who go about their daily work, dry exotic fruits and build ships on the wooden yards.

Enjoy a rowing sampan excursion through the narrow zigzag canals of Tan Phong Islet. Visit the local candy factory to see how they make coconut candies, banana candies and other sweet foods from tropical fruits. Learn how to make rice paper from simple ingredients. Admire the beauty of green water landscape, walk around quiet villages, lush orchards or deepwater rice fields.

In the afternoon, arrive in the laid back town of Sa Dec where to join an exciting city tour. Troll into bustle colorful land market, sip some Vietnamese coffee on the nice riverside promenade. Stop at a nearby flower village with colorful orchards. Explore the charming town with lots of colonial architecture, old markets, churches, old villas and traders’ houses. Visit a beautifully renovated traditional house of a Chinese trader’s family. This sumptuous building belonged to the main character of the novel “The Lover (Nguoi Tinh)” and indeed to the lover of Marguerite Duras.

In the late afternoon, be back to the cruise boat, have a romantic dinner, enjoy a sunset cruise with more photo opportunities from aboard.

Saturday: Cao Lanh – Tan Chau (optional embarkation in Cao Lanh)

In the morning, arrive in Cao Lanh. After having breakfast, explore Tan Thuan Dong Islet, which is famous for its orchards full of mangoes, fruit orchards, longans, and ambarellas. This is a less-visited place and the off-the-beaten tour shows you hidden gems.

Maneuver through the scenic Cho Vam Canal, join the unique sunset cocktail party on the top deck, enjoy one of the most spectacular moments that Mekong River has to offer.

Sunday: Tan Chau across the border to Phnom Penh in Cambodia

Mekong River Cruise from Vietnam to Cambodia ends after breakfast. Embark our speedboat, take an exciting ride to Cambodia. Pass the first Cambodian style pagodas, make a slowly changing landscape from the plains of the delta to a river landscape. Our professional guide accompanies our passengers all the way to Phnom Penh. The immigration procedures into Cambodia will be processed with the help of the guides. We ensure your safe transfer from the jetty in Phnom Penh to your hotel. Around lunchtime, arrive in Phnom Penh, say goodbye to your guide.
