I. Overview

Ho Chi Minh City, also known as its former name of Saigon is the business and financial hub of Vietnam, with a prominent history dating back to hundreds of years. The Khmers originally settled the region, with the Vietnamese taking over in the 17th century. The French conquered Saigon in 1859 and made it the Cochin China’s capital in 1862. The facts resulted in various elegant architecture and broad boulevards which still exists today. Saigon was renamed after Ho Chi Minh – the spiritual leader of Vietnamese Communism in 1976 to celebrate the reunification of north and south at the end of the Vietnam War. However, the old name “Saigon” is still used daily by many residents of Saigon and Vietnamese people – particularly in the south. The official name Ho Chi Minh City is often shortened to HCMC or HCM in writing.
